THE VIRGIN OF SORROWS
A fragment of the icon of Crucifixion
This icon shows the face of the Virgin full of pain and sorrow, when standing beside the cross.
Considering the fact that a similar image of Mary supporting her head on her hands (which symbolises reverie) is also found in the icon of the Nativity of Christ, this picture reveals one more aspect – Mary was aware of her Son’s fate from the very beginning, and she humbly consented to fulfilling the God’s wish till the end of her life.
