SAINT NICHOLAS
Nicholas lived at the turn of the 3rd and 4th Centuries. He was Bishop of Mira, famous for his kindness, generosity and piety. With time, a multitude of legends emerged, connected with this figure. The most famous include the story of three poor maidens who would not have got married but for the golden orbs discreetly slipped to them by Nicholas as a dowry, the story of young men saved from death sentences, and the story of sailors saved from drowning.
The custom of giving presents to each other on 6th December, which is the anniversary of the Saint Nicholas’s death, still prevails today.
