ANNUNCIATION
This icon features two figures – the Archangel Gabriel in a dynamic motion on the left, and Mary sitting still and calm on the right. The royal dignity of the Mother of God is highlighted by the ceremonious throne on which she is sitting. She is holding a skein of purple wool in her hand because – as tradition has it – the moment the Angel came to her, she was weaving a curtain to the Temple of God. There is a circle with emerging rays – the symbol of the Holy Spirit on top of the icon.
